Wow, Bill has done his homework today. Well done!!
The '79 draft was amazing. When a 1000 point scorer like Brian Propp isn 't even among the top 3 of his draft class thats pretty damned wild! |

Thanks Bill. I really enjoyed looking at the 2003 draft and seeing all of the players the Penguins passed over to pick Fleury 1st overall |

The '79 draft saw 103 of its 126 selected players (a whopping 81.7 percent) play at least one game in the NHL - bmeltzer
Bill, is that the same criteria you used for your percentages in each year? |

If we don't take Jake DeBrusk with number 7 he'll probably be gone when we pick again. |

Bill, you have put a ton of work into this one, awesome to read back on some of the names and selections.

1 game tho... lot of instances where a guy gets that game due to circumstance, not so much merit. I think a threshold of 20, or 50, or 100 games would have been more interesting. |

Happens all the time in the first round.
1979
7 teams passed on Ray Bourque, including St. Louis who took Perry Turnbull with the 2nd overall pick.
1982
Flyers took Ron Sutter 4th, Scott Stevens went next. Could be worse though, with the 1st overall pick Boston took Gord Kluzak. Imagine if the Bruins top D pair in the 80s and 90s had been Ray Bourque and Scott Stevens!!
1988
9 teams pass on Teemu Selanne in the first round including Quebec who took the immortal Daniel Dore with the 5th overall pick.
1995
Jarome Iginla falls to #11 while Chad Kilger goes to Anaheim at #3
2003
Nik friggin Zherdev goes at #4 over Tomas Vanek, Ryan Suter and a host of future NHL stars.
Hell, if it was easy, we'd all be GMs

That's interesting. A lot of people consider 2003 to be a "deep" draft, but there's a lot other drafts that had better % than 2003 did. |

I always found it somewhat interesting to imagine what could have been if...
It just goes to prove year in and year out how scouting is such an inexact science. Forsberg and Giroux were reaches while Ricci and Sittler were considered solid safe picks.
And BTW, though I agree Stevens would've most likely been the better selection for Boston, Gord Kluzak was a heck of a defenseman coming out of juniors who probably would've had a more impactful career had he not suffered serious knee injuries early on.

The difference from the 2003 draft to others is that 2003 provided a higher yield of quality picks.
A lot of teams cashed in with one or 2 top 6 forwards or a top 4 and higher defenseman. |

When you bump the criteria to 164 games (two season's worth) the percentages look different.

The first round had 16 All-Stars, and the second round had 6 more.

The 2004 draft had three All-Stars in the first round, and none in the second. |

So a successful draft for the flyers with our number of draft picks and relatively high end picks (top 100s) 5 nhl starters or bust !? |

the hard part about that is organizational - would these players be the same players had they been drafted by the organizations that would have drafted them at that position in the draft. |
